Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park: Washington USA

The Wanapum Nation, a Native American Tribe called the the region home. Their Tribal lands stretched from the Columbia River to the Snake River. The Wanapum Tribe was a friendly tribe and co-existed with the White settlers from the time of Lewis and Clark. The tribe made a living by agriculture and fishing. They carved over 300 petroglyphs into the many cliffs in the region. The Tribe never signed a treaty, since there were never any problems. This is an amazing tribe with an amazing history! Due to this fact, they were never recognized by the Federal Government or given any right to the land. It is thought that the natives may have used the petrified wood to make arrowheads and other tools. What a rich heritage the park has! It is living history! It is right in your own back yard! The park is located at 4511 Huntzinger Road; Vantage, Washington 98950 and is owned by the Washington State Parks and Recreation. The park is open from 6:30 am to dusk during the summer. Winter hours are 8:00 am -dusk only on weekends and holidays. Winter hours are in effect from November 1 to March 1. Entrance is by donation. The phone number for the park is: 509-856-2700.

There is a nice day use area with 57 picnic tables. What a perfect place to dine! Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park is a favorite with locals and fills early during the weekends and on holidays. If you desire a picnic table, it is first come, first serve. So plan to come early! Summer concerts are often held in the Park. Some of the best local bands are featured. The Columbia River Gorge Concerts are a favorite with local residents. The Wanapum Recreation Area has 50 camping sites with full hook-ups. There are two well-maintained restrooms.
