Hsinchu Welcomes The Year Of The Goat!  The people of Hsinchu, like all of Taiwan, are excited about the new year. The official 15 day welcome for The Year of the Goat began yesterday. Spirits are high and the residents of Hsinchu are buried in the colors of red and gold.  It is believed that the colors of red and gold will bring prosperity and good luck for the coming year. It is a time to be happy and celebrate the coming New Year. Not only do you see red and gold, but there will be many bowls of oranges and tangerines around every home. These things are believed to bring health, prosperity and long life. These are the important things to welcome the new year. The people of Hsinchu are rejoicing in the Year Of The Goat.

Many homes are eating Jai, as this is a dish with many meanings. This vegetarian dish is eaten because of it’s  significance. It is part of this  Buddhist culture to desire to cleanse oneself by eating vegetables. It is believed to be  packed with many good-luck foods. Sea moss is believed to be important for prosperity. Lotus seeds are important for those who want children. Some believe it brings the birth of sons. Noodles are thought to bring longevity, and are left as long as possible. Lily buds  are believed to send 100 years of harmonious union. What bride and groom would not want that? Chinese black mushrooms fulfill your wishes from east to west, so load up on mushrooms. Leafy greens, such as Chinese broccoli, are “served whole to wish a long and prosperous life for parents.
