White Pass Summit British Columbia
White Pass is a mountain pass in the Coast Mountains. These mountains form the border between the State of Alaska and Yukon, Canada. It is also known as Dead Horse Trail. Many of the early pioneers lost their lives on this deadly trail. It was a cold and isolated trail. It was wicked! It was deadly! The white water rapids of the Yukon River was one of the deadliest crossings in the area. The name, Dead Horse Trail, comes for the many horses that also lost their lives. The trail leads from Skagway, Alaska to Yukon, Canada. It is one of the prettiest trails and passes around, but for the pioneers it was also the deadliest. Today, these beautiful white water rapids are one of the amazing sights at White Pass.
Dead Horse Trail went from Skagway, Alaska over White Pass to Lake Bennett. Lake Bennett is a beautiful lake. It became the winter home to many men, women, and children that were traveling to Dawson City. It was here that thousands of boats were made in the long winter. A tent city, called Bennett grew rapidly. Now this city is gone, except for the train station and café which provides the hot meals for the passengers.
White Pass and Yukon Railway provides many scenic tours of the area. There are rail tours, rail/bus tours, and rail/bike tours. There are even tours for the sturdy souls that hike over the Chilkoot Trail. There are camping facilities at Bennett Lake and hot meals are available for $15.00. The campers can then catch the train one way back to Skagway. How awesome to see White Pass from the comfort of the scenic train.
