Beautiful Lake Pend Oreille is Idaho’s largest lake. It is 43 feet long. Lake Pend Oreille has 111 miles of shoreline to enjoy. There is so much to do on Lake Pend Oreille, for those who enjoy the outdoors. It is the fourth deepest lake in the US at 1,158 feet. Crater Lake is the deepest at 1,949. Tahoe is the second deepest lake at 1, 644 feet. This is followed by Lake Chelan in Washington at 1,486. Even though Northern Idaho has freezing temperatures most winters, Lake Pend Oreille never freezes over. It will freeze along the shallow shores, but due to its extreme depth, it never freezes over completely. There is never a time of year that you can not enjoy Lake Pend Oreille.
Lake Pend Oreille has terrific scenery. The beautiful evergreens are green all year.There is nothing like the stately Ponderosa Pine, the Douglas Fir, and the Red Cedar. There are also trees that turn beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. The Aspen, Hemlock, Birch, and Larch all show their colors in the fall. All of the trees are white and the land so clean with a deep dusting of Idaho snow.
Lake Pend Oreille has outstanding water. It is clean and tastes delicious. Fishing is important year around. It’s shores are surrounded by national forests. Most of the shoreline is not populated. Boating is an important pastime. There are several cruises on the lake. Sandpoint is the largest town near the lake. Schweitzer Ski Resort is nearby. There is lots to do in Sandpoint and the skiing is fabulous at Schweitzer.

The forests are full of Dear, Elk, Gray wolves, and Moose. If you are quiet and blend in, you can see squirrels, Bears, Coyotes, and yes, the Bobcats. Bird watchers often see Bald Eagles, Osprey, Owls, and Hummingbirds. Hawks, Woodpeckers, Ducks, and the Mountain Bluebird also call Lake Pend Oreille home. At different times of the year, the Lake is home to different migratory water fowl. Lake Pend Oreille is paradise for those who love nature. What is there not to like about Lake Pend Oreille?
