December 17, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

One Of The Tea Farms Of Taiwan

The world over, sees many tea farms and plantations in the higher elevations, in the hillsides, and in the cool mountain areas. Here is where the tea flourishes. According to the Chinese, tea is one of the seven necessities of life itself.  Throughout China and it’s republics there is an ancient Chinese proverb. When  translated into English it states:” a family’s seven basic necessities are firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea.”  Tea is a requirement for work to be done, for good mental and physical health, relaxation, socialization, and healing. In the countries that recognize tea as a necessity, it is valued not only as a drink, but when made of the correct blend of herbs for the ailment, it aids in bringing healing.

Tea Is Life In Most Of Asia

In China and its republics, tea is life. A life without tea is no life at all. The above photo shows a store shelf in Taiwan full of many different varieties. Taiwan is just one of many countries that see the value of tea.

TWG Tea…..One Of The Worlds Finest Teas From Singapore

Singapore creates some of the finest quality teas in the world. These teas are all natural and are grown without any pesticides or other chemicals. TWG is one of the largest tea companies in the world, with over 800 varieties of tea. TWG teas are sold in high end tea houses and boutiques world wide and a limited variety can be ordered on Amazon in the USA. World wide it is sold on the company website: https://www.twgtea.com/

Tea Brings Life To The Deserts Of Jordan

The question is always asked: Why would you want hot tea in one of the hottest deserts in the world?  Well, the answer lies in the tea. You are hot, as you have been walking in the three digit heat of the Wadi Rum and you pass a tent. The Bedouins, who live there,  quickly invite you for tea. You sip your tea and begin to feel cooler. Now you begin to wonder what is in the tea that can produce such coolness in the desert.

Our Bedouin hosts begin by taking Maramia Sage, which is known to lower the body temperature, and add a small amount of Galangal root or leaves, which has a general healing effect on the body. Galangal is related to ginger and originally came from Laos. The aroma of the tea is a cross between Anise and Basil and has a slight mint taste. Many of the Bedouins use a few Libyan Black Tea Leaves just before serving. The tea is delicious and the aroma stays in the tent for quite some time. Best of all, you are cool and refreshed in the middle of one of the hottest deserts of the world.

Mysterious Chinese Herbs Make Healing Teas For Many Ailments

These many herbs are blended to provide aid for mild to severe illnesses in the body. Mint, for instance, can make a delicious tea which aids in digestion issues, helps conquer headaches, and many illnesses.

All over the world herbs and tea leaves are used for many different things. Of course, remembering that we are not doctors, always consult with a doctor before using any of these herbal teas for medicine. These teas also make a delicious hot cup of tea in the day, but different herbs have different effects on different people. Some will cause blood pressure to rise and others maybe cause it to lower. So if you decide to use an herbal tea, always consult your doctor before embarking on a tea adventure.

Plenty Of Choices For A Warm Cup Of Tea In Israel

Fruit, Rose hips, Hibiscus, Herbal, and Mint bring many choices to the open markets in Israel. There is always something for that perfect cup of tea.

Fo Guang Shan Monastery

May 28, 2015 by Exploretraveler.com 3 Comments

Fo Guang Shan Monastery at Xingtian Village in Taiwan

Fo Guang Shan Monastery

Fo Guang Shan Monastery is one of the monasteries in the International Chinese Buddhist Religious Movement. The monastery is located on the North-East of Dashu Township on the bank of the Gaoping River.

Address:  No.153, Xingtian Road, Xingtian Village, Dashu District, Kaohsiung City

Phone: 886-7-656-1921

Monastery Life

Fo Guang Shan Monastery runs like a well oiled machine. As the day progresses everyone participates in the next activity. The day begins at the break of dawn to the sound of a wooden board. Once the call is made, all must wake up quickly. Everyone must move quickly so as not to be late for the morning formation. Hurry! Hurry! No one can be late! Fo Guang Shan Monastery has begun the day!

After the morning formation the monks form a line in front of the Buddha. With palms together they stand perfectly still for two hours chanting before the Buddha. Time is forgotten!  This is thought to clear the mind. It is to sow the seeds of wisdom deep in the mind. It also is believed to aid in having an attitude of repentance and thankfulness. One is thankful for life! Thankful, for the new day!

The morning porridge is then drank. It is good to learn  acceptance of the offered food as sustenance to the cultivation of the mind and spirit. The monks also invite the Buddha to join them in the morning meal. Silence is practiced. Peace is in the room.

The next activity is to meticulously clean the monastery and temple. One is taught to perform each task with a peaceful mind. After the temple is cleaned, then the mornings work is preformed. Everyone has a work to do in this peaceful place. A break is given in the afternoon. Most of the monks use this time to take a nap. After the nap, the work of the day is finished. If one does not work, one does not eat!

After the evening meal there is time for lessons and self-study. At the sounding of the board the lights go out and the monastery is quiet for the night. The day usually ends around 10 pm. All is quiet! Fo Guang Shan Monastery has gone to sleep.

Monastery Programs

Programs of the  Fo Guang Shan Monastery include a free medical clinic with mobile units that serve remote villages. This is often all the medical care that the villagers receive. There is  an annual winter relief program organized to distribute warm clothing and food supplies to the needy. On the Fo Guang Shan Monastery grounds is  a children’s orphanage  and seniors’ home . A wildlife conservation area to protect all living creatures is on the grounds.  There is  a beautiful and peaceful  cemetery for the care of the deceased whose families have no money for burial.

A Place To Visit

Fo Guang Shan Monastery is one of the most impressive of Buddhist Monasteries. It is complete with a Buddhist Temple, museum, bookstore, gift shop, pilgrimage site, and a Starbucks. It is a perfect place to spend a peaceful day.   ‘Fo Guang Shan literally meansBuddha’s Light Mountain. It is an international Chinese Buddhist new religious movement based in Taiwan, It was founded in 1967, and promotes humanistic Buddhism .The grounds are extremely pleasant. They are beautiful. The view overlooking the river is out of this world. At the close of the New Year Celebrations, a fireworks display is done nightly. Children love this nightly display of light on the mountain. The Monks are extremely friendly. They are very accepting of visitors. There are guest accommodations at the monastery. This is perhaps one of the top ten places to see in Taiwan.

Herbs: Medicine Of The World

Herbs
Mysterious Chinese herbs in the traditional medicine shops of Hong Kong

Herbs: Medicine Of The World

Herbs are a plant or a part of a plant that is used for its scent, taste, or therapeutic properties. Every culture has herbs that are used to help us overcome different diseases. The key is to learn which ones are good for what and when and how to use them. The herbs of the field are a blessing for our welfare. Herbalism is use of plants for medicinal purposes, and the study of such use. Some are very common to us and others not so much. The whole world makes up the herbal medicine cabinet. Plants have been the basis for medical treatments throughout much of human history. Especially in places like India, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan traditional medicine herbs are still greatly used.

Herbs for teas,  or tisanes, are when you seep a certain type of herb in liquid, usually hot water. Though teas  are made in a few different ways, that is perhaps the most common.  Mint is a great appetizer or cleanser, A cup of warm mint tea before a meal helps with digestion.  It is also very soothing for  stomachs in cases of indigestion or inflammation. It can also work wonders for a headache. In cases of bad asthma, it has been very helpful to some. When you feel sick to your stomach, drinking a cup of mint tea can give you almost instant relief. Mint is one of the common herbs in our society and is easy to grow. In fact it is best grown in a container unless you want a mint orchard. It will quickly spread. You can use the leaves fresh or dry them for a later time. The many mint herbs are very easy to prepare.

Decoctions are usually boiled and are  usually of harder substances like roots or bark. When I make a ginger herb tea, for example, I usually use the root or rhizomes. I like it a lot stronger and I boil the rhizomes till soft and mash. Then I continue to simmer on a very low heat for 8-10 minutes at least. The result is a very strong ginger tea. This is the type of tea you will want if you are using it to fight a major disease like Ovarian Cancer, IBS, or Alzheimer’s. It is often used along with traditional methods for added healing benefits and to help with the nausea that accompanies some of the standard treatments. If Alzheimer’s runs in your family, consider adding ginger in everything you can and drinking several cups of the strong tea daily.  In the case of Alzheimer’s, you could also make a ginger candy using honey instead of sugar.  If fighting cancer, I would want to be careful about any type of sugar. I have also found those who have good results for pain relief.  Ginger is also good for tired muscles, weight control, Glucose levels, and Arthritic inflammation.  Ginger is another one of the common herbs that are easy to use.

Maceration  is the old infusion method of herbs with a high mucilage-content, such as sage and thyme. To make macerates, plants are chopped and added to cold water. They are then left to stand for 7 to 12 hours (depending on herb used). For most macerates 10 hours is used. I generally put in a bowl of cold water and cover with a plate and let stand 10 hours. Sage is used for treating conditions from cankers to memory loss.  It is  more than just your average kitchen herb. Maceration makes a strong tea and you can serve it over a small amount of ice or serve at room temperature. Findings have confirmed that drinking lots of sage tea and using sage in all you can help the brain to function and is useful to stall off Alzheimer’s.  Sage oil is also excellent for healthy adults for increasing their brain activity.

Tinctures are usually made with either alcohol or vinegars. Often times cough syrups are made using alcohol. Different herbs can be added to vinegar to make awesome salad dressings. Tinctures seem to be used when you want something really strong with the benefit of either alcohol or vinegar.

There are thousands of herbs throughout the world and each area has their local herbs. You can also grow your own herbs and use fresh, or order many of the ones from across the world either dried or freeze-dried. The world of herbal medicines is unique and intriguing. Grow what is easy for you to get to start and then start branching out and growing other herbal plants and fruits. There are many seed exchange groups online where you can start getting things from India or South America. Once you get started, the world becomes your doctor. Of course always check with your medical doctor before using something new or different and do your own research. Google is a great research buddy. Many areas have classes on different herbs and herbal oils. The sky is really the limit!
