The Rugged Unspoiled Coastline Of Big Sur

March 7, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Big Sur

The rugged unspoiled coastline of Big Sur

The rugged unspoiled coastline of Big Sur’s beaches in California. All the way from Carmel River State Park in the South to San Dollar day use beach in the North, you will find amazing Big Sur beaches.

On the South end of Big Sur is Andrew Molera State Park. While underdeveloped, it is the perfect place to enjoy the vast array of hiking trails. You will find trails leading through meadows and others the go along the beach. There is also one of the nicest walk in camping grounds in the Big Sur.

Across from Andrew Molera State Park is the Point Sur State Marine Reserve and Marine Conservation Area. Along the Big Sur you will find an abundance of abalone and fish, as well as large stocks of mussels. Along the sheltered shores of the Big Sur you will find Sea Otters, Sea Lions, and Harbor Seals who all take shelter there. It was near Point Sur in the 1930’s that the Sea Otters were “rediscovered.” Here at Point Sur, they find the protection from the marine elements that they seek. Beautiful Gray Whales, Humpback Whales and even an occasional  Blue Whale Migrate through these peaceful waters and swim past Point Sur each year. Whale watching during the annual migration can be an exciting adventure. Gray Whale migration is from December till May. The Humpback Whales and Blue Whales can be seen during the summer migration. It is the perfect opportunity to learn more about these magnificent creatures.

Point Sur State Marine Reserve begins at Cooper Point to the South, and goes all the way North to Point Sur. Within this current marine reserve were the original seasonal home of the Ohlone, Esselen and Salinan Tribes. These nomadic tribes of hunter-gatherers found rich reserves within the Big Sur. During the proper season, they found a rich supply of marine life to support their families, including a vast abundance of mussels.

Point Sur lighthouse is another special treat found within Big Sur. Point Sur lighthouse is a turn of the century lightstation which was manned until 1974. In 1974 is became completely automated. It stands on top of a very large volcanic rock which is located just off shore. This lightstation is a National Historic Landmark, and is open to the public for limited tours. This is the only lighthouse in the State of California that is open to the public.  Access is limited to preserve its quality and remoteness.  For more information on tours check out the website at: http://www.pointsur.org/.

If you are looking for a pleasant and beautiful vacation, look no farther than the Central California Big Sur Beaches. These Pacific beaches are beautiful and serene, providing the perfect getaway from the rat race. Whether you need a quiet remote cabin or a base camp for hiking adventures, you will find it in Big Sur, California. Pack a bag, and gather the family, it is time for you to head on out, to Big Sur.

The Art Of Mountain Biking

February 27, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Mountain Biking

Mastering Mountain Biking At Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

The art of Mountain Biking is a skill that enables you to take a very durable bike, built for cross country and/or trails, and ride off road over the roughest mountain terrain. It can be challenging, but is very rewarding. You can ride trails that are so rough that they are hardly trails. You can take off on your own with just a compass. You can climb mountains and see what most people can not even dream about. When you get off the beaten path or on trails that are barely trails, the vistas grow. What a way to see your world!

Enjoy the deep shade while biking along the trails among the California redwoods. These enormous old growth redwood trees provide a pleasant environment to enjoy mountain biking at it’s best. Monteray County provides some good good riding. Here you will find something for every level of mountain biker. There are many extremly rugged challenges for the experienced mountain biker. One example of this skill level is the trails around Fort Ord Public Lands.  Here you will practice all your skills and them some. Beginners can ride the gentle paved trails of the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. Whatever your skill level, there is a trail just for you in Monterey County.

The Fort Ord National Monument has bike paths for every age group from families with younger children, to those who are in tip top shape. There are paved trails and rough trails, there are flat trails and mountain terran. Whatever you are looking for, you will find it in the Fort Ord National Monument in Monteray County, California. It really is time to take to the hills.

Another popular ride is the ride at Pebble Beach. The trail goes all the way out to the Lone Cypress and back, One of the best part of the ride is that anyone can navigate it with ease. On your way out, keep the Ocean beaches on your right, and when you ride back they will be on your left.

A more traditional, and slightly more challenging bike route begins near Cannery Row on the Monterey Bay Coastal Bay Recreation Trail. You stay on the trail for a little more than a mile. The trail will then end. Then you can cycle through Pacific Grove and continue past Point Pinos. Then you will enter Sunset Drive just past Asilomar State Beach. It is here that you will see Pebble Beach for the first time and 17 Mile drive. Then you will continue on to Lone Cypress. What an amazing day!

Wherever you decide to go riding, you will find a good challenging ride for your skill level in Monteray County, California. Biking adventures are everywhere. Why not make this the year you discover the adventure of the California Redwoods.? What are you waiting for?  Grab your bag and head on out to your favorite trail head for an enjoyable day of riding in the California Sun.

grapes

Endless Grapes In The Napa Valley

Grapes are small round  berries that are semi-translucent and encased by a smooth skin. They can be green to all shades of red. Some contain a small edible seed, while other varieties are seedless. Like blueberries, grapes have a protective covering or whitish bloom. Grapes that are eaten as is or used in a recipe are called table grapes. These grapes are delicious right off the vine.   Wine grapes are used in the making of the world’s finest wines. Raisin grapes are used for dried grapes or raisins, which are excellent for snacks or baking.

Better blood sugar balance, insulin regulation, and increased insulin sensitivity are some of the side benefits of grapes of every color. This humble grape is indeed a friend to the diabetic. A cup of grapes gives you all the benefits of this amazing fruit. Sprinkle some grapes on a salad or experience a cup for a delicious snack.

Some of the areas that grapes are known to be superstars are the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, immune system, inflammatory system, blood sugar regulating system, and nervous system. Grapes are also believed to assist in the prevention of colon, breast, and prostate cancer.

The antioxidant nutrients found in grapes are phenomenal. Along with their strong antioxidant qualities, grapes provide us with equally strong anti-inflammatory benefits. Grapes are believed to help lower the blood pressure, keep cholesterol volumes staple, and regulate inflammation.

seeds

                      An Ancient Secret

The abundant antioxidants, including flavonoids, linoleic acid, and phenolic procyanidins, that are found in the extract of the grape seed is believed to help protect your blood vessels from damage, which may help prevent high blood pressure and help ward off aneurysms.

These tiny grape seeds are completely edible, though not too tasty. Eating them regularly has been known to possibly help improve your cardiovascular health, greatly reduce leg swelling and help with varicose veins. They have even seemed to  provide some protection against certain types of cancer in certain studies. Using them often may  offer some weight loss assistance. The humble grape is also believed to treat depression in some people, and give clarity to the mind.

There has been many studies done on grapes and the grape seed, but the verdict is not yet in. They do make a tasty addition to the morning smoothie and are used regularly in Eastern Medicine.
