Amazing Adventure Along The Robertson River In The Foothills Of The Eastern Alaskan Range

January 2, 2018 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Snow Covered Spruce Trees

Snow covered Spruce Trees decorate the season in the brisk temperatures of  Alaska. Have you ever seen such magnificent beauty? The Alaskan Range is magnificent and provides many adventures, no matter the season. If you have taken the time to educate yourself and are prepared for the unexpected, winter is one of the most fantastic seasons, with adventure around every corner.

The Beauty Of The Cold Long Winters On The Robertson River

The Robertson River is a tributary of the Tanana River. Sections of this beautiful and secluded River can be reached by car during the summer months. While other areas are seldom totally ice free, even in the summer. The river runs through one of the most spectacular wilderness areas in the state.

The Robertson is teaming with many species of fish, and both winter and summer can be the perfect season. Fisherman spend the long summer days fishing in the many rivers and tributaries. Once the rivers are frozen solid, they provide the finest platform for ice fishing. Ice fishing is a winter style of fishing that is used by those who are willing to brave the elements in order to fish for some of the tastiest fish around.

The Eastern Alaskan Range Is A Haven For Wildlife

Wildlife abounds in the heart of the Eastern Alaska Range. Along the icy banks of the Robertson River is the snow covered wilderness that is home to many species of wildlife. Once the snow begins to settle in and stick, there is a beautiful white winter wonderland. Hunters often ignore the extremely cold temperatures for the opportunity to get meat that will last for months. Am I dreaming, or does this look a lot like a winter paradise?

A Thin Layer Of Glacier Ice On The Robertson River

Thick beds of glacier ice on the North side of this immense  wilderness ensures that the Robertson River often has a thin to thick layer of glacial ice. This glacial fed river is a small piece of paradise in the Tanana Valley.  This is the Alaska that most have never seen. The river is but a small piece in a perfect puzzle.

A Moose Grazing On The Small Twigs Of Partially Buried Trees And Bushes

Moose, unlike the bear who hibernates for the winter, spend their short winter days grazing for small twigs, the size of a toothpick. They wander the wilderness valley hoping for small branches and tasty twigs of Birch, Poplar and Willow trees. This is a time of extreme weather and bitter cold. This is the Alaskan wilderness!

The Robertson River, which flows through the wilderness valleys, provides all levels of adventure. There are many opportunities to hike, climb, trek, camp, float, fish, and hunt. There are many remote hunting and fishing lodges located in this vast mountain wilderness. So take the plunge and join us for a real Alaskan Style Wilderness Adventure. It is past time to explore those areas off the beaten path.

A Culinary Adventure In Istanbul Turkey

December 22, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Baklava With A Turkish Touch,  Keşkül ~ Turkish Almond Pudding, And  Şekerpare

Almost everyone knows what Baklava consists of? But have you had it with a Turkish Touch? Throughout the Middle East; the Caucasus, which is a region at the border of Asia, Europe, the Black Sea,  and the Caspian Sea, and of course modern day Turkey, comes a wide variety of Baklava. Traditional Baklava by nature, is over sweet, made with walnuts and phyllo dough, and then it is soaked in honey.  When you are sure there is no version that is a favorite among the many recipes, you encounter Turkish Stlye Baklava. In Turkey, you will see that pistachios  are usually used instead of the traditional walnuts. There are also several other small changes made from the other recipes. The end result is amazing.  This is the king of the Baklavas.

Then there is the discovery of Keşkül, an almond pudding made with milk, coconut, and pistachios. It is usually served in a special bowl with a spoon. Sprinkled on top are coconut flakes and pistachio pieces. The name, itself, has an interesting story behind it.  In the time of the Ottoman Empire, this was the name of a special bowl that lodges used for begging money, so that the lodge could make this special pudding. The pudding was then served in these same bowls and given to the poor.  This special desert is served in these same bowls even today.

Our next major desert is  Şekerpare . It is by far the favorite among the Turkish people and is so easy to make. In a nut shell it is an almond pastry that is dipped in a a very thick lemon flavored syrup. This is simple and delicious.

The Above Delicacies Are Best When Served With a Big Cup Of Turkish Coffee

There is coffee and then there is Turkish coffee. The difference is in how it is made.

The Traditional Way To Make Turkish Coffee

It is made by taking ground unfiltered fresh Turkish coffee beans and boiling them over the lowest heat till they froth. It is then served and the remainder goes back on the cooking area till it froths a second time and then another serving is made.

Now this is coffee!

A Street Vendor Selling Warm Roasted Chestnuts And Fresh Grilled Corn On The Cob

Taking your time to wander the side streets of Istanbul, Turkey as well as the major will render many such vendors as the one in the photo. It is easy to grab a bite of lunch as you check out monuments, museums, and other places of interest. In Turkey, like all of the Middle East, there is little reason for going hungry.

Relaxing With Food And Friends

How do you end that perfect day? You have met new friends and you just want a bite before returning to your hotel, as dinner will be latter.  Why not visit one of the small eateries and have a snack with with Turkish coffee.  Good conversation and coffee, seem to just go together.

On your next adventure to Turkey, we hope you are inspired to explore the world of good eats, Turkish style.

Shown here is General Makura with the Big Buddha in the background. He is on guard from 5-7 am and is represented by the rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac and has an ax in his hand.

As you travel the path, just keep on the path and you will not be lost. Keeping the Big Buddha in sight is easy.  The finally leg of the journey is the 260 stairs leading up to the Buddha.  There are several rest areas and places to take pictures as you climb the stairs.

Discovering The Mysteries Of The Belem Tower In Lisbon Portugal

December 6, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com 1 Comment

Carved Balconies And Spectacular Turrets On The Tower Of Belem

The Tower Of Belem, in Lisbon Portugal, with it’s ornate exterior, carved ornamental decor and extraordinary balconies, has guarded Portugal since the sixteenth century. Its outstanding architecture is closely related to the Moorish architectural designs of that time.  The base has six sides with the remarkable turrets on the corners.  This amazing tower was  built to stand guard over Portugal, making an attack by sea, extremely difficult for its enemies to pull off.

Notice The Fine Details On The Base Of The Tower

The Tower was designed and authorized by King D. Joao II, but built near the northern bank of the Targus, by Manuel I during the years between 1514 and 1520.  It was actually built on a small island that was close to the shore at that time.  This was a work of love, intended to protect a proud and important people from attacks coming by the way of the sea.

Notice The Intrigue Of The Almost Lacy Balconies And Elegant Turrets.

The turrets have crosses on the tops of the turrets, seemingly to be a reflection back on the symbols of the Cross Of The Order Of Christ. The Order Of Christ grew out of the what was the former Knights Templar  Order, abolished in 1312.

Shown Is The Tower Of Belem As It Jets Out Into The Tejo Estuary

As the clouds settle in on the Tejo Estuary, you can see the shapes and silhouettes of this beautiful fortress which sits on the northern bank of the Estuary. Notice the peacefulness of the water, the calm, and the mystique of the area. It is almost like the estuary, itself, knows it is in the safe hands of the fortress.

Close Up Of The Fine Details Of The Top Of The Turrets

Notice the beauty of the Lioz Limestone that the structure is constructed from.  The four story tower is over 98 feet high. Also the crosses of the Templars can be seen engraved into the limestone. if you look up from here you will see St. Vincent, the Patron Saint Of Lisbon, keep careful watch over this seafaring kingdom. On the other side the Archangel Michael, a warrior angel,  has two statues.

The Ocean Mote Under The Draw Bridge

The mote surrounded the Tower which is at the mouth of the Tagus River. Over the centuries this has often been referred to as “The Ceremonial Gateway to Lisbon.”

The Drawbridge Which Provides Access Over The Ocean Mote

The drawbridge still functions just as it always has. It is raised when the Tower Of Belem is closed to visitors and opened when the Tower is open.

Steps Facing The Tower Of Belem

Any exploration of the Tower begins on the steps which lead you to the drawbridge and entrance to the Tower. From this vantage point it is also the best place to get a good look at the beautiful rhinoceros carved  into the base of the tower. This was a gift from the Sultan of Cambay to Manuel 1.  This was a very unique but valuable gift to the Portuguese nation.

Outside Tiles Around The Tower Of Belem

The tiles outside the fortress are all handmade and cut in unique and diverse sizes, fitting nicely together for a sturdy walkway.

Looking Out From The Tower Observation Deck

As you look out from the observation deck of the tower, you are eye to eye with this beautiful canopy of trees.  It almost seems as if you are so high that you can see forever.

This fortified tower is a major monument and one of the many iconic symbols of the city of Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon has many such symbols and all tell a part of the early history and culture of Lisbon.
