A Worldwide Tea Adventure

December 17, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

One Of The Tea Farms Of Taiwan

The world over, sees many tea farms and plantations in the higher elevations, in the hillsides, and in the cool mountain areas. Here is where the tea flourishes. According to the Chinese, tea is one of the seven necessities of life itself.  Throughout China and it’s republics there is an ancient Chinese proverb. When  translated into English it states:” a family’s seven basic necessities are firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea.”  Tea is a requirement for work to be done, for good mental and physical health, relaxation, socialization, and healing. In the countries that recognize tea as a necessity, it is valued not only as a drink, but when made of the correct blend of herbs for the ailment, it aids in bringing healing.

Tea Is Life In Most Of Asia

In China and its republics, tea is life. A life without tea is no life at all. The above photo shows a store shelf in Taiwan full of many different varieties. Taiwan is just one of many countries that see the value of tea.

TWG Tea…..One Of The Worlds Finest Teas From Singapore

Singapore creates some of the finest quality teas in the world. These teas are all natural and are grown without any pesticides or other chemicals. TWG is one of the largest tea companies in the world, with over 800 varieties of tea. TWG teas are sold in high end tea houses and boutiques world wide and a limited variety can be ordered on Amazon in the USA. World wide it is sold on the company website: https://www.twgtea.com/

Tea Brings Life To The Deserts Of Jordan

The question is always asked: Why would you want hot tea in one of the hottest deserts in the world?  Well, the answer lies in the tea. You are hot, as you have been walking in the three digit heat of the Wadi Rum and you pass a tent. The Bedouins, who live there,  quickly invite you for tea. You sip your tea and begin to feel cooler. Now you begin to wonder what is in the tea that can produce such coolness in the desert.

Our Bedouin hosts begin by taking Maramia Sage, which is known to lower the body temperature, and add a small amount of Galangal root or leaves, which has a general healing effect on the body. Galangal is related to ginger and originally came from Laos. The aroma of the tea is a cross between Anise and Basil and has a slight mint taste. Many of the Bedouins use a few Libyan Black Tea Leaves just before serving. The tea is delicious and the aroma stays in the tent for quite some time. Best of all, you are cool and refreshed in the middle of one of the hottest deserts of the world.

Mysterious Chinese Herbs Make Healing Teas For Many Ailments

These many herbs are blended to provide aid for mild to severe illnesses in the body. Mint, for instance, can make a delicious tea which aids in digestion issues, helps conquer headaches, and many illnesses.

All over the world herbs and tea leaves are used for many different things. Of course, remembering that we are not doctors, always consult with a doctor before using any of these herbal teas for medicine. These teas also make a delicious hot cup of tea in the day, but different herbs have different effects on different people. Some will cause blood pressure to rise and others maybe cause it to lower. So if you decide to use an herbal tea, always consult your doctor before embarking on a tea adventure.

Plenty Of Choices For A Warm Cup Of Tea In Israel

Fruit, Rose hips, Hibiscus, Herbal, and Mint bring many choices to the open markets in Israel. There is always something for that perfect cup of tea.

For countless years the journey to Po Lin Monastery was done over land by bus on one of the most dangerous and steep mountain roads. Po Lin Monastery is home to the Tian Tan Buddha, not only a tourist site, but a place where the Buddhists make journeys to pay homage to the Buddha. Ngong Ping 360 now connects the Lantan Island with Tung Chung. You arrive in the village of Ngong Ping, where you can spend a few delightful hours exploring the village.  Tian Tan Buddha On Lantau Island

Buddha Amoghasiddhi   is known throughout Asia as The Big Buddha. This is the tallest statue of  Buddha   Amoghasiddhi in the world. It stands over 111 feet high. One can not help but enjoy the craftsmanship and skill that went into making this world renown statue.

One Of The Divine Generals With Tian Tan, The Big Buddha

You enter the path through a very elaborate gate and proceed on a path that has statues of 12 divine generals. Each one has one of the animals of the zodiac on his head. Shown here is General Makura with the Big Buddha in the background. He is on guard from 5-7 am and is represented by the rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac and has an ax in his hand.

As you travel the path, just keep on the path and you will not be lost. Keeping the Big Buddha in sight is easy.  The finally leg of the journey is the 260 stairs leading up to the Buddha.  There are several rest areas and places to take pictures as you climb the stairs.

The Big Buddha Sitting On A Lily Pad Holding The Six Devas

Each of the Six Devas stand for an offering made to the Buddha and are the six stages believed to be necessary for each person to pass through to reach perfection. These stages are patience, wisdom, zeal, charity, meditation and morality.

It Is Time For A Green Island, Taiwan Adventure

December 11, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

On Our Way To Adventure On Green Island

Green Island is a tiny island and part of the Republic Of China. Over time, it was created by volcanic activity. It is one of the most  amazing spots for adventure in the Pacific Ocean. It might be a small island, but it is one of the most spectacular places to visit in Taiwan.

The island is full of markets to explore, including one of the best fish markets. It is easy to rent bikes, and scooters for use in  exploring this breathtaking island. On the other side of the island is the Green Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse is both stunning and historical. It was built out of necessity, as visibility was not good and ships needed assistance to make it into the proper channel.  There is also a hiking trail over on the other side of the island and it is possible to walk all around the island. On Green Island, adventure is at your finger tips.

Green Island Lighthouse

As you take to the byways and alleys, you will find little eats on every corner.  If you follow the smell of BBQ, you will discover Cuttlefish on the grill. It is one of the best island treats waiting for you  in the side streets, the alleys, and the markets.

The Tantalizing Aroma Of Cuttlefish On The Grill

Jhaorih Hot Springs

Jhaorih Hot Springs is one of only three saltwater hot springs in the world. Come tired from a busy work week and leave relaxed and refreshed. What a spectacular place to spend a couple of hours, soaking in the healing waters of Jhaorih. Since it is heated by the volcanic lava that is under Green Island, it is always ready and hot on demand.

Rock formations of Sleeping Beauty and Pekingese Dog Rock

The scenery on Green Island is magnificent and nothing less than stunning.  It is a rocky coastline with unique volcanic rocks, some named and some waiting for you to discover the perfect name.

Fishing Is Great Near The  Coral Reefs Green Island

The fish in the reefs are abundant and the indigenous people have made a good living from these reefs.

Scuba Diving Off The Shores Of Green Island

Green Island is one of many tiny islands that have their home in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. These little islands are what is left of major volcanic eruptions over thousands of years. They are amazing prime diving spots, with scenic hot spots all over the island.

Whatever your reason for coming to Green Island, here you will find the perfect escape. There is no traffic to snarl at, or pollution to make you sick, only peace, and beauty beyond belief. So grab your backpack, your journal, and your camera. If you love to dive, all the equipment can be rented or you can bring your own. If you just need to enjoy the island and soak the stress away, grab your swimsuit. All you need are a few basic tools and your on your way to adventure.

ExploreTraveler Presents: Exploring Lisbon Portugal Part 1

November 15, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

The 25 de Abril Bridge in the capital city of Lisbon Portugal is the longest suspension bridge in Europe.

Since we have been able to travel around Lisbon we thought today we would post an interesting photo tour of Lisbon Portugal.

There are several great spots around the city where you can get great views, and see whole areas of the city or even the whole city if you are high enough. It’s important for us to try and see the details of a monument or within a view of rooftops. Since architecture is built with real hands, and hard work we look toward the emotion of life within each image, and try to tell a story.

This view give’s us a tremendous amount of detail of old, and new. Notice the different tile roof homes with terraces on top or on the side.

The City center of Lisbon has a mixture of old and new, and you can find very old architecture built within the city.

Transportation around the city can be arranged in many different ways, and you can choose what fits your own style.

The art work of this women carved within this monument in the city center helps tell the story of the people of Lisbon.

Notice the building sitting within the area of someones home here. Every day this family awakes to be within the old compound of antiquities. Maybe they understand what and where it is or maybe they don’t but life continues, and new structures mix with old.

Unique food is abound in Lisbon, and this fish dish with a different form of potato chip then what most are used too.

On the other side of the city is one of two Christ the Redeemer Monuments. This one was built after the one in Brazil was built. If you have time you can take an elevator and see the whole city of Lisbon on top. It’s a wonderful view, and well worth the time it takes to get there.

Religion is a part of the human experience, and the Cathedral of Maria helps tell that story. Each edge of the building, and each person who lives around it give us a glimpse of the past within it’s walls and structure.

Art within these churches tells us the ideas, and importance this area had to the people during a different time, and why others of faith flock to its walls to pray.

The candles of prayer represent the peoples thoughts, hope, and dreams being lifted up to their creator.

The ancient old halls, and grotto’s hold those of the past within their caskets along each niche within it’s walls.

At the center of this church lies this ongoing excavation of past life that once lived here hundreds of years ago before the cathedral ever existed.

Lisbon, Tower or Torre Belem is a site to be seen. This once critical tower was the first line of protection as the ships began coming into the area of the city. This once island now sit’s out by the monument of the unknown soldier.

Apples are one of the most versatile fruits around. I love to cook wild rice with onion, fresh ginger, leeks, garlic, and mushrooms. When done, add a curry sauce and heat through. Treasures In The Old City Of Jerusalem

September 19, 2017 by Exploretraveler.com Leave a Comment

Treasures Of Frankincense, And Myrrh

Treasures of Frankincense and Myrrh are found in the Holy Land. At this time many of these treasures are brought in from other places, but that was not always the case. 2,000 years ago Frankincense trees were everywhere. Essential oils were produced from leaves, stems, and the roots of these trees. Now it is no longer true. For more than 1,500 years, there has been no frankincense trees growing in the Holy Land.  But times change and miracles happen. In 2012 the impossible happened again.  Dr. Solowey has managed to grow the first shoots of a tree whose white sap was precious. This sap was worth more than gold. This miracle is now alive and growing in Kibbutz Ketura. It is one of the treasures of the Holy Land.

Kibbutz Ketura is deep in Israel’s Negev Desert. It is here that Dr Solowey is carefully nurturing this sapling.  In her Negev greenhouse she is also nurturing saplings of myrrh and balm of Gilead. Balm of Gilead is thought to be the “gold” brought by the Three Wise Men to baby Jesus in the city of Bethlehem. These three trees are now making the start of a come back. Soon the Holy Land will once again be flourishing with Frankincense, Myrrh, and Gilead. They are worth more than gold.

So what is Frankincense, myrrh, and balm of Gilead? Why should we desire them? Back in the first century, frankincense, myrrh and balm of Gilead were known as “gold” to the ancients. They were prized in Egypt for their aroma. Their healing qualities were known far and wide.  They were three of the eleven ingredients found in the recipe used for the incense in the Temple of Solomon.  The recipe for the incense has been a secret but we know what went into the incense. They were also used as medicines. They were used in ointments and liquid medicines for internal use. All these treasures are making a come back in our time.

In modern time we know that Frankincense has many uses, let us look at a few. Frankincense essential oil is marvelous for all types of skin care. It heals burns, rashes, and sores. It is to be desired by all for healthy skin. You can put 3 drops in a carrier oil and use on your skin to keep it healthy or to heal unhealthy skin. This treasure is thought to send messages to the brain and help in the healing of nerves and nerve related issues. Frankincense oil in the bath will give you the feeling of peace, and relaxation. Add a few drops of frankincense oil to a hot bath for total relief from stress.  Add to an essential oil diffuser. It will clean the air of pollution and germs. You can use it to deodorize and disinfect any surface. Frankincense is excellent as a toothpaste. Take Organic Baking Soda and add a few drops of Frankincense to make a paste. It helps to prevent cavities, oral infections, tooth decay and bad breath. You can use it to fight wrinkles and aging. Mix 6 drops of Frankincense to one ounce of unscented oil. You can add 1-2 ounces of Frankincense 100% pure oil for internal use to 8 ounces of water or to 1 Tablespoon of honey for relief of indigestion or gas. Frankincense has truly earned it reputation of being more valuable than gold. These are just a few of the things that this fantastic oil is known for. Do your own research and you will even find that it fights cancer and other diseases like heart disease and blood pressure. What an amazing oil! PEOPLE WITH BLEEDING DISORDERS SHOULD NOT USE. IT CAN MAKE IT WORSE.

Now as turn our attention to Myrrh, let’s discover a few of the things that makes this essential oil so awesome. First we find that it is a sap that comes from the  Commiphora Myrrha Tree. This tree is grown in Africa and the Middle East. Botanically, it is related to Frankincense Oil. It is the most used of all essential oils. This oil was used in incense and perfumes by the ancient Egyptians. The Greeks used it for healing wounds in ancient times.  It is an anti-viral and antibiotic. Myrrh essential oil do not allow germs to infect your system. It can be used to prevent most any microbial ailment. Thus it is good to lower fever, prevent and cure food poisoning, control coughs, mumps, measles, chicken pox and colds. It prevents infections in wounds. Myrrh essential oil gives relief from excess mucus and phlegm. You can use on small cuts and wounds to prevent infection. It is an antibiotic. This oil is used in aromatherapy,  as a sedative, and antidepressant.

MYRRH SHOULD NOT BE USED BY PREGNANT WOMEN. YOU SHOULD NOT USE MORE THAN THE RECOMMENDED DOSES.

It blends well with Frankincense, Lavender, Palma Rosa, Patchouli, Rosewood, Sandal Wood, Tea Tree and Thyme essential oils. You can use with any carrier oil. The three most common are Almond, Olive, and Jojoba Oils.

The final treasure of Israel that we are going to look at is Balm of Gilead. Balm of Gilead is made from the buds of the Cottonwood Tree. This can be done in the winter when other herbs may not be able to be used. The buds of the tree are available from fall to early winter. In Western Washington you will find them growing everywhere. In drier regions they grow near rivers. You can use branches that are downed by the wind to avoid using buds that will become leaves. Here is how you make Balm of Gilead. After you collect 1/2 jar of buds, wash and put in clean jar. Extra buds can be frozen for latter use. Pour the jar full of Olive Oil. Screw lid on top of a paper towel and set jar on a plate. It has a tendency to overflow. Label and date jar. For a few weeks stir jar daily. Make sure all buds are covered with oil to prevent mold. If they are sticking out in the morning , just stir them back into the oil. Soak the buds for at least 6 weeks and up to a year. Strain off the liquid. Do not wash jar, as it is seasoned for the next batch. You can apply directly to the skin or make into a salve.

Balm of Gilead is an anti-inflammatory , antimicrobial (it kills really little things that can infect you), and it is an analgesic, giving pain relief. It’s an extremely good  healing balm. It stimulates the skin and more.

Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding. Do not use if allergic to Aspirin or honey bee products. It is considered safe to use on the skin. It should not be taken orally.

When in Israel on your next Holy Land Adventure, check out the small shops for stocking up on these special treasures of the land. Watch for the trees that are growing to start producing and other trees to start growing. Soon there will be an orchard of Frankincense, Myrrh, and Balm of Gilead. Your next adventure could be your best. See you at the herb shop.

As with all herbs and oils, they are medicines. You should always consult your personal doctor before using something new and different.

Taiwanese Street Food Favorites

Taiwanese Street Food Favorites

Taiwanese Street Food is well known the world over. Taipei is famous for its many night markets and all the many delicacies. The night life of Taipei is not only about bars and it’s many nightclubs. They are famous for their night markets that stay open till midnight and many even into the wee hours of the morning. Taiwanese street food is delicious and comes in many forms.

There are many favorites among street foods and Taipei, the capital, has them all. The air is filled with the aroma of stinky tofu, candied tomatoes and plums, and an old time favorite, beef noodles. Taiwanese street food is amazing! Smoke curls in the air, hawkers sing out into the night, and the streets are alive with excitement. Small stalls are lit up, and brightly colored  signs  beckon in the night. The streets are alive with music and the crowds are overwhelming. Everyone loves the night market!

As you wander through the crowds, you will see those delicious candied tomatoes and plums everywhere. Continue further along and you will find a Taiwanese favorite, stinky tofu. You will not go far, before you will find a noodle stall. There is nothing like Beef Noodles! A perfect night of snaking begins with Beef Noodles, Squid, or Fried Chicken and ends with one of the candied fruits. Now that is good eating!

Going deeper into the elbow to elbow crowds, you will discover Taiwan’s unique dumplings. Dumplings are a national favorite and each year there are contests to see who will make the perfect dumpling. But the one smell you will never cover up, no matter where you are or what you eat, is the stench of Stinky Tofu. Stinky Tofu is amazing if you can get it past your nose!  Stinky Tofu is a favorite among Taiwanese street food!

Taiwanese street food is the best in the world! Judging from the crowds, I would say that most people love candied tomatoes. Another all time favorite is the candied plums. Those make elbowing the crowds worth it! No other food in the market has that special taste that candied plums have. Taiwanese street food is some of the most exciting in all the world. Asia is known for it’s street food, but Taiwanese street food leads them all.

Alaska’s “Little Norway”

If you can imagine a journey up the Inside Passage of Alaska, a journey so rich, so powerful, so life changing.  This is a journey so peaceful, yet powerful, so rich and yet timeless.  Saint Petersburg is a small fishing village, isolated from the rest of the state most of the year.  It’s small harbors are quaint and peaceful, welcoming the smaller cruise ships to it’s port. It’s people are friendly and waiting as they always have, for the fishing boats to come home.  This is a village that revolves around the fishing boats, the needs of the fishermen, and the routine of preparing the fish. There are many active canneries in this tiny community, and a few days here is life-changing. Life has stood still, the news has rarely effected this community.
